Beneficiaries enjoying their lunch from Habibie's Seafood stall
Project Belanja!, Food from the Heart's initiative that allows beneficiaries to redeem hot meals from neighbouring hawker stalls via the QR code on their beneficiary card, has been launched at two locations - Tampines and Kolam Ayer.
The initiative is one of the ways we have adapted to the needs of the needy - by offering freshly-cooked food to beneficiaries who do not have the time to cook, are physically unable to cook, or who wish for variety in their meals are able to tap on the initiative as a source of food.
Mr Zu, who lives with his epileptic and disabled brother, juggles his duty as a sole caretaker with his part-time work. Living on $600 a month with the medical expenses of his own and his brother's to pay, his anxiety disorder is aggravated from financial worries. Food from the Heart has helped Mr Zu and others like him to lighten their daily expenses with quick meal solutions from Project Belanja!.
Acknowledging that its food provisions go beyond being just sustenance, we also use Project Belanja! as a platform to provide those who need it with the intangible gift of choice.
"We usually cook lunch and redeem our Project Belanja! meal for dinner because we don't want to eat the same thing every meal. They don't cook the same thing every day, so that's even better," shares beneficiary Mdm Wong, who lives with her husband, both of whom have retired.
Food from the Heart has tied up with food vendors to include Halal and non-Halal options, and we seek to work with more hawker centres and stall owners. Project Belanja! will be kickstarted at three new locations - Toa Payoh, Mountbatten and Kembangan Chai Chee – in the coming months.
